June Flock Together Feature - Lively LORIES!
Lories, also called lorikeets, are a standout group among parrots. They are among the most colorful parrot species and they have a unique brush-like tongue, which allows them to remove pollen and nectar from flower blossoms. With nectar as a main part of its diet, it’s no surprise that lories are high-energy birds.
Native Region / Natural Habitat - Australasia. There are approximately 55 different species of these birds in the world, but only about 12 are kept as pets. These varieties can be divided into two main groups - the Small Australian Lorikeets, and the larger tropical lorikeets. The smaller varieties include the Purple-crowned and Little lorikeet which are around 19cm in length. They are fairly quiet, tend not to talk and have a lifespan of around 10 years.
